The title Grus Pervigil (Latin for “The Watchful Crane") is a subtle nod to the symbolic tradition of the crane across cultures and centuries. Often associated with wisdom, longevity, and peace, the image of the ever-watchful crane dates back to Roman depictions. Here, we find a chosen member of a flock watching over its community with a small stone in its talon. Should it fall asleep the stone would drop and alert the crane to remain vigilant. Similarly, I hope for this website, and the writings and projects it brings together, to reflect a commitment to engage thoughtfully and curiously with literature, culture, and society.
